This picturesque European-style mountain town set inside BC’s Kootenay Rockies is a haven for outdoor adventurers.
Nothing works up an appetite in Kimberley like hiking and biking in the summer, or seeing the area from a different view when skiing or boarding the area’s surrounding mountains.
Bavarian-style town tucked away in the Kootenay Rockies
Many of the restaurants in the Kimberley area focus on experiential dining rather than quick eats. As you walk around town you will find quirky wooden buildings that look like homes from Bavaria, all owning their unique features. Each restaurant offers a different style, with varying cuisines that will never make you feel like you’re having the same experience twice.
Experiential dining meets mountain town culture
From a coffee shop set inside a fairytale style garden, to pubs aimed precisely for that relaxing apres-ski experience, Kimberley gives its spin on mountain town culture with a food scene that you’re not likely to find anywhere else.
If you’re looking for a place with personality, look no further. Once you get close to the restaurant you’re met with stuffed bears greeting you before you even enter the establishment – and that’s just the beginning. The restaurant itself is creatively decorated with vinyl-record art and bear-themed decor. The tables are draped with picnic-table style cloths, keeping everything homey and cozy.
And the food! The menu is all things comfort, hitting the spot every. single. time. From shepherds pie, to ribs or pizza, if you’re looking for a warm tasty meal you’ll have certainly found it. But make sure you bring your appetite because the portion sizes are huge! Finish it off with a slice of coconut cream pie, often labelled as “the best ever”.

The Old Bauernhaus
Come and dine at The Old Bauernhaus for a full Bavarian-style experience. The building was born 350 years ago in Southern Bavaria, Germany, and later dismantled and shipped to Canada in the 1980s. With most of its original features still intact, The Old Bauernhaus is renowned as one of the most experiential restaurants in Kimberley.
Surely, the most ordered plate on the menu is the Bavarian Feast. With brie cheeses, garlic prawns, mixed greens and bauernplatte-spinach to start, followed by wienerschnitzel, jagergschnetzeltes spatle, pan-fried potatoes, and vegetables for entrees, you won’t be left hungry! The dishes come served on family-style platters, garnering that authentic German experience and perfect for sharing with your group.
The Old Bauernhaus also provides a full vegetarian menu so guests with different dietary needs can still enjoy the adventure. The beverage menu is also extensive, with features like “liquid dessert”, a fantastic selection of German beers and bohemian spirits. Don’t leave Kimberley without dining at this restaurant.
