LOCAL FAVORITES

• Food & Drink: The kitchenette is equipped well enough to cook properly in, with electric hotplates, a microwave, a dishwasher, a fridge, a coffee maker, a kettle and a toaster, so a stay here can be entirely self-catered. The village centre and its shops are 200 m from the door, which is where to go for a daily stock-up. Ax-les-Thermes also keeps a lively centre of typical village restaurants, and there are altitude restaurants up on the ski area if you would rather eat between runs.
• Outdoor Activities: Ax 3 Domaines runs from 1,400 to 2,400 metres and holds more than 80 km of pistes across three complementary sectors. Bonascre is the gentlest and best for families and beginners; Saquet is the one for forest descents and wide panoramas; Campels is reserved for confident skiers after a fright. Ski schools, equipment rental and relaxation areas are all in the station rather than in the building, and the gondola from the village centre reaches the plateau in about ten minutes.
• Places to Visit: The Bains du Couloubret thermal complex is the reason the town has the name it does, with sulphurous pools at 33 degrees and doors open all year, which makes it the obvious stop after a day on the pistes. Nature is the other draw: the Orlu Nature Reserve and its Wolf Park, the Gorges de la Frau, and the small villages of Merens-les-Vals and Orgeix. The village itself sits at 720 metres, 1 hour 30 minutes from Toulouse and close to the Andorran border.
