Canmore’s Golf Courses: Rocky Mountain Greens

The golf seasons in Canmore are longer, and the greens are encircled by a Rocky Mountain backdrop. It’s easy to see why Canmore is an unforgettable golf destination.

Maybe it’s the sublime mountain vistas or the fresh pine-spiced air, but there’s just something about Canmore’s golf courses that makes for an incredible golfing experience.
Because golf courses in Canmore are set at higher elevation, the golfing season often stretches from mid-May to early October. Whether you’re hunting for a challenge or just wanting to unwind amid some stunning scenery, Canmore is a top choice for savvy golfers.

Golf courses with diverse terrain

Many of the courses here blend naturally into the landscape, meshing well with the rolling terrain and lush forests.
The only drawback is that all this natural beauty can be a little distracting! From the unique greens of the Stewart Creek Golf Club to the intimidating drops at SilverTip resort, playing a round in Canmore is like going on an outdoor adventure.

Golf courses rooted in the community

Several of Canmore’s top-rated golf courses were designed by locals.
Gary Browning was the mastermind behind the acclaimed Stewart Creek Golf Club, which earned plenty of praise from Golf Digest and other critics. Meanwhile, local resident Les Furber designed the SilverTip course, artfully planning its thrilling terrain.
Furber also assisted with the redevelopment of the historic Canmore Golf & Curling Club, which was built by locals back in 1926. This course alone demonstrates the town’s enthusiasm for the sport of golf.
For those enthusiastic about golfing in Canmore, we’ve provided the scoop on Canmore’s local golf courses to help you plan your next golf vacation in the Rockies.

1. Kananaskis Country Golf Course

Set within majestic mountain surroundings, the Kananaskis Country Golf Course boasts two championship courses encircled by rugged mountain peaks and bordered by the Kananaskis River.
The luxurious facilities are run by professional and friendly staff and there is also free valet parking. The first course is Mount Lorette, which has many challenging features including bunkers and elevation changes to pique the interest of even experienced golfers. Mount Lorette is the flatter of the two courses and it is known as the “water course” because crystal-clear ponds and glacier-fed streams come into play.
The second course, Mount Kidd, is flat with some rolling hills and some slightly elevated greens – several of which are fairly large. A double green serves as the 9th hole for Mount Lorette and the 18th for Mount Kidd.
After an exhilarating round of golf you can relax in the dining room and lounge, enjoying the gourmet cuisine, local wines and spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains from the outdoor terrace.

2. Stewart Creek Golf Club

Stewart Creek is consistently rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest and is a must-do on any golfer’s bucket list.
Developed under the masterful hand of golf course architect Gary Browning, the course features breathtaking mountain views, abundant wildlife, abandoned mine shafts and its namesake, Stewart Creek, on a challenging yet fair layout.
This course was designed to provide an intriguing mix of shots: a tricky tee shot to a perched green and an ultra-wide 10th hole are among this course’s quirks. With a total of 40 bunkers, and a few trees in the fairways, these links are certainly unique.
The golf course offers 18 championship holes and 7,195 yards to make it an unbelievable mountain golfing experience. It’s open seven days a week from mid-May to October. Carts are mandatory and we suggest booking your tee times well in advance.

3. Canmore Golf & Curling Club

This course has history.
The Canmore Golf Club was established in 1926 along the shores of the Upper Bow River. Constructed and funded by the residents of Canmore, it is truly the town’s ‘local’s course’.
The fairway is moderately challenging, and good for golfers of all abilities. Although this isn’t a massive course, golfers have plenty of opportunities for long drives on the front nine.
Things get a little trickier on the back nine, as the varied terrain offers more challenges. You just might go through every club in your bag while playing the final holes.
As well as providing golf in a phenomenal setting, the club features a casual restaurant if you’re looking for a tasty sandwich with a view, or a lovely Sunday brunch. The course is semi-private and is open seven days a week. Carts are optional.

4. SilverTip Resort

This is the quintessential Rocky Mountain golf course.
Nestled above the town of Canmore on the side of Mount Lady MacDonald, SilverTip Resort features an 18-hole, 7,200 yard championship golf course designed by golf architect Les Furber.
Ranging in elevation from 1,310 metres to 1,560 metres, the course has a bird’s eye view of the Bow Valley corridor from the highest point on the course, the 9th tee, that provides jaw-dropping views. Wildlife encounters are the norm here so it’s not unheard of to have four-legged, furry spectators watching you tee off.
The course has earned accolades from Golf Digest and other critics in addition to winning over many locals. But it’s the slope that’s really impressive.
Although the steep terrain may seem intimidating from the tee, Furber designed the course so the ball naturally feeds into the fairway. So SilverTip isn’t quite as challenging as it looks.
The course is open seven days a week from mid-May to October. Carts are mandatory and you’ll need to book your tee time in advance.
