Western Canada's Best Summer Mountain Festivals

Booking a Canadian summer vacation? Get ready to party! Canada’s resort towns have no shortage of seasonal festivals to delight visitors…

Summer in Western Canada, particularly in the mountains, is nothing short of spectacular. At this time of year the mountains, well known for their winter adventures, turn into the backdrop for summer festivals of all kinds.

The Banff Summer Arts Festival takes place on weekends from mid-June to end of August in Banff, Alberta. Packed with music and cultural performances, this festival is the perfect place to mix adventure with the arts. Take in a daytime hike and sit under the stars listening to talented musicians showcase their work. This festival knows what it is doing – it has been around since 1933.

Another long running festival is the Penticton Peach Festival, located less than an hour between both Kelowna and Osoyoos, that has been delighting crowds since 1947. Held annually in August, this is a family friendly weeklong gathering that has something for everyone and all parks are free to enter. From the entertainment stage and the sandcastle competition to the parades and much more, you’re guaranteed to have a peach of a time.

Looking to dance the day away? The Starbelly Jam Music Festival might be just what you are looking for. Created 14 years ago by a community of music lovers, this festival is a hidden gem of music, friendship and fun. Tucked away on the shores of Kootenay Lake, BC, it takes place in July and is just the right size to make you feel that you’ve stumbled upon something special. Priding itself on being a family friendly event, Starbelly Jam has lots of room for the kids to run and play too.
Kimberley, BC is home to Julyfest, happening in – you guessed it – July each year. This festival pulls together an eclectic array of activity that is sure to get you moving and most certainly smiling. Highlights include some long-standing traditions, including the Canadian Bocce Ball Championships and an invitational soccer tournament. Julyfest also showcases some new activity, including a downhill long boarding competition and fresh talent on the stages. As with any good festival, it is filled with local food vendors and beverages to satisfy just about every craving.

Whistler continues to bill itself as a year-round destination and it too has its share of summer activities and festivals – especially if physical activity is what you are looking for. Crankworx Freeride Mountain Bike Festival is sure to get your heart pounding- even just watching the events! This festival takes place at the end of July and runs over the course of the week into early August. Want more adrenaline producing activity? Check out Whistler’s Tough Mudder race in June.
