Top 3 Canadian Ski Resorts for Powderhounds

Deep champagne powder, steep pitches, miles of vertical, treed glades…. Sound like heaven? Read on to learn our top 3 resort picks for powderhounds.

Western Canada is home to phenomenal “champagne powder” that skiers around the world dream of. If you are thinking of booking a ski holiday to Canada and are craving tons of powder, definitely consider visiting one of these 3 excellent options:

Revelstoke Mountain Resort

Revelstoke is the big guns that powderhounds are looking for. It offers huge vertical (it’s so high that you’ll ski through three different weather systems on your way down), steep pitches, and deep, dry powder. Still a somewhat undiscovered gem, one of the best things about Revelstoke is its lack of crowds, so you can fully enjoy your stake of fresh powder and pristine terrain. It may be a relatively new resort, but Revy has already solidified its reputation as the destination for hard-core skiers and riders. Maybe it’s the 14m of snow it gets per year, maybe it’s the 1713m of vertical (the longest in North America), and yet again it could be that nearly half of the runs at this resort are rated ‘expert’.
The resort is plenty challenging for even advanced skiers, but if you’re jonesing to get out of bounds, Revy also offers unforgettable cat-skiing and heli-skiing. The heli-skiing area gets up to 18m of snow in a season. Just imagine miles of smooth, untouched snow laid out before you, like a melted marshmallow treat. Booyah.
Revy fully recognizes its status as big skiing and riding, so it has made great efforts in recent years to make sure little legs have lots to choose from too. A tubing area, learners slope, and child care centre are all on hand to guarantee that everyone can have a great time on the famous Revy slopes.

Fernie Alpine Resort

fernie skiLocated on the Powder Highway (as if that doesn’t say it all…) in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rockies, Fernie has been known to get as much as 11m of the powdery white stuff in one season. Popular but not yet overdeveloped, it offers the perfect balance between the amenities you need without the crowds. More than 2500 acres of terrain, and 5 large bowls filled with powder, Fernie makes powderhounds giggle with glee. 40% of the runs at Fernie are rated ‘expert’, and with 12 double-black rated trails and back-country options, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Cat-skiing and Heli-skiing are both offered in Fernie, and the town itself is quaint and charming with great shops and restaurants to explore when you’ve hung up your onesie for the day. If you’re able to walk on those burned out pins that is.
Even if your crew isn’t made up entirely of powderhounds, there are plenty of beginner runs and alternate activities such as dog-sledding, sleigh-ride dinners, and ice-skating to enjoy too. There’ll be no sad faces in Fernie.

Kicking Horse Resort

Untitled 2Even expert skiers have to bring their ‘A’ game to Kicking Horse. A 3-hour drive from Calgary awaits the 4th tallest vertical in North America (just a hair behind Jackson Hole). 2800 acres of terrain, 1260m of vertical and a plethora of black and double black diamond runs. And the snow? Kicking Horse is known as the ‘champagne powder capital of Canada’ for good reason. The snowfall isn’t staggering at the top, maybe 7m per year, however, it’s the quality of the snow that makes powderhounds so happy. It’s light, dry and powdery and there are enough chutes and bowls filled with the fluffy stuff to keep you grinning from ear to ear for multiple days.
One thing to note about Kicking Horse is that most of the expert terrain is on the top half of the mountain. Once you get up there, you’ll want to stay up there. Eagle Eye Restaurant located on the top of the mountain means great eats without having to waste time descending and ascending. Ski-in/ski-out accommodations means quick and easy access and your energy is spent carving tracks and not getting to and from the hill. Awarded ‘Best Steeps’, ‘Best Un-Crowded Slopes’ and ‘Best Out of Bounds’ by Powderhounds.
Just because KH draws experts from all over doesn’t mean it’s not appropriate for families. It’s a 10k run from the top of the mountain to the bottom so there is plenty of terrain near the base for beginner and intermediate skiers and riders to try their ski-legs.
