Fernie Mountain Biking: The Best Trails in the Area!

Looking for some of the best mountain biking in BC? Fernie’s vast network of trails offer something for everyone, no matter your skill level!

Fernie has a vast network of mountain biking trails and a highly-active mountain biking community.
In fact, Fernie has some of the best mountain biking trails in all of BC, with runs that appeal to some of the most technically advanced riders, or alternatively those who are just beginning.
With over 100 different trails in the Fernie area, there’s an endless supply of mountain biking terrain. Because of this, there are many different routes that cater to any kind of skill level and style. There are skill parks with dirt jumps, terrain for fat-tire biking and of course plenty of mountain biking trails. Bikers wanting to gain an elevated position for long, downhill rides can enjoy the lift-access trails at Fernie Alpine Resort.
Fernie Alpine Resort transforms from a prime ski resort into a fantastic bike park each summer, offering some of the best lift-accessed trails in Canada. Before heading off to bike, make sure to inquire about current trail conditions and pick up a trail map from any of Fernie’s bike shops or the Visitor Information Centre. Bike and gear rentals are available at a number of places in town and there’s a bike repair shop on the mountain for added convenience.
While there are six different areas around Fernie that contain various biking trails, here are our top 3 places to ride:

1. Fernie Alpine Resort

With a network of 37 trails on the mountain that range from wide, flowing routes for beginner and intermediate riders to steep, single-track descents through the forest, Fernie Alpine Resort has something for everyone in your group.
They have one lift available seven days a week and open up a second lift on weekends and holidays, allowing you to enjoy all the fun of a downhill ride. However, all trails close after September long weekend except for their year round winter trails, which are strictly limited to: cross country trails Silk & Manchuria, as well as the Hobbit Trail (Boom Ski Out) – Galloway Loop.
Details

  • Lifts are open from 10:30am to 4:30pm daily and until 7pm on Thursdays
  • Mountain biking season begins June 29 and ends Labour Day weekend in September
  • If you’re looking to improve your biking skills, we suggest you look into their great on-mountain clinics offering camps specially designed for kids, female, and beginner riders

2. Mt Fernie Provincial Park

There are plenty of access points to trails connecting Mt Fernie Provincial Park with Mount Fernie, and Fernie Alpine Resort. A majority of the trails accessed here are black or blue level trails, requiring plenty of skill and technical ability. For those of you looking for steep descents down single track routes that give plenty of opportunities to catch some air – this is a great place to start.

3. Town Trails

If single-track, high speed descents are not your style, or maybe your kids aren’t quite ready for that yet, there are a number of gentle trails in town and along the river that make for great family riding.
We love the Main Town Loop which circles the town and runs close to coffee shops, art galleries and playgrounds to make for interesting diversions. And yes, there’s an ice cream shop or two along the route, too! Trail maps are available at a number of locations around town.
