Take a Ride with Canmore's Snowy Owl Sled Dogs!

Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours are a Canmore based dog sledding company wholly committed to the ethical and humane treatment of their resident four-legged team! Take a tour for yourself to find out more…

Snowy Owl Sled Dogs has been a family owned and operated company since they opened in 1983, and through the past 30 years of running their business, founder Connie Arsenault and her family have prioritized one single thing: the sled dogs themselves. Affectionately referred to as “husky heroes” by the 2-legged Snowy Owl staff, all 180 resident sled dogs are treated with as much love and affection as household pets.

About Snowy Owl Sled Dogs

Snowy Owl seeks to be an industry leader in educating visitors on ethical, humane mushing and sled dog care.
Since they were founded over 30 years ago, Snowy Owl has grown from a single dog team with 10 sled dogs to 16 dog teams and 180 sled dogs. The company have been careful to grow at their own pace, favouring “quality over quantity” and always putting the ethical treatment of their four-legged family at the forefront of everything they do. The dogs at Snowy Owl have been specially sourced or bred for sled-pulling work.
As the Snowy Owl website explains: “The main reason that these northern breeds were chosen for pulling sleds was that other breeds could not withstand the harsh climate and terrain. There emerged several breeds of dogs specifically adapted to snow conditions sub-degree temperatures. The Canadian Eskimo Dogs, for example, have distinct, inherent characteristics differing from other huskies relating to their sense of wildlife detection and ice conditions. At Snowy Owl we are still breeding and using these bloodlines based on their unique abilities.”
Snowy Owl Sled Dogs has has earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence 6 years in a row (2011-2016).

Caring for the “Husky Heroes”
Each dog at Snowy Owl lives in a spacious area with neighbouring dogs to play with, and the facility has a large free-run pen. The dogs enjoy lots of social time with each other and with the Snowy Owl employees, and the employees take great care to make sure each dog’s kennel home is comfortable. Once a dog is finished their sled dog career, Snowy Owl even has an adoption program to allow each beloved “husky heroes” to be rehoused to enjoy their retirement years!
